"I am excited that the new documentary Shift Change will be shown at SEWF.  This film shows the transformative power of the worker-owned co-operative model as it is lived in Mondragon, Spain and in various region of the US, which have all been hard hit by the economic crisis.  I encourage people to watch either the whole movie or (as time only permits) any portion of it; the film's structure is such that viewers can get a lot out of it even if viewing only part of this inspiring work.”

“Just who is changing the world?”

poster cropWHO CARES? answers that question by traveling the globe in search of the most innovative social entrepreneurs currently imagining a better planet. This eye-opening documentary introduces us to people with simple solutions to the hard questions that affect us all — Bill Drayton (founder of Ashoka), Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize), Mary Gordon and Rodrigo Baggio, among others – brilliant oddballs who are making changes, bringing solutions to the problems we face, generating huge social impact and — most of all — inspiring people to do the same.

More than a movie, WHO CARES? embodies a MOVEMENT that inspires people to be changemakers.  From the life stories of 18 social entrepreneurs around the world, the documentary shares real cases of people who got tired of the situation in their communities, decided to stop complaining, rolled up their sleeves and changed the world.

For newcomers to the social field, the film can be very enlightening. For the people already working in this field, this movie can be a powerful tool to inspire, validate and collaborate with social impact.

More About Shift Change (Including screening times)

Shift Change cropSHIFT CHANGE is a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin. It tells the little known stories of employee-owned businesses that compete successfully in today’s economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.

With the long decline in US manufacturing and today’s economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. The usual economic solutions are not working, so some citizens and public officials are ready to think outside of the box, to reinvent our failing economy in order to restore long-term community stability and a more egalitarian way of life.

There is growing interest in firms that are owned and managed by their workers. Such firms tend to be more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based. Yet the public has little knowledge of their success, and the promise they offer for a better life.

SHIFT CHANGE encourages support for employee ownership, and provides on-the-ground experience from a variety of enterprises and locations.
